Side Effects of Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella

What are some of the side-effects of YAZ®, Yasmin®, and Ocella®?

Studies show that some of the more common side-effects include deep vein thrombosis (“DVT”), pulmonary embolisms, heart attacks, strokes and gallbladder disease.

What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis (“DVT”) is a condition characterized by the presence of a blood clot in a vein, usually in the legs or pelvis. DVT does not always show symptoms, but may cause swelling and pain in the affected extremities. If the blood clot dislodges and travels to the lungs, it may cause a pulmonary embolism - a potentially fatal condition. A blood test or an ultrasound is commonly used to diagnose DVT.

What Is A Pulmonary Embolism?

A pulmonary embolism (“PE ”) occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lung. The blood clot often originates from a deep vein thrombosis (“DVT”) in the veins of the legs or pelvis that travels to the lungs. A PE can cause difficulty breathing, chest pains and increased heart rate. Severe cases may also cause low blood pressure, collapse or death. A blood test, pulmonary angiography, or CT scan may be used to diagnose a PE.

What Is Gallbladder Disease?

Gallbladder disease involves the formation of gallstones, which occurs when the fluid in the gallbladder solidifies into stone-like substances. Gallstones may require treatment such as medication to minimize or dissolve the stones, or surgery to remove the gallbladder. Symptoms include bloating, indigestion, nausea, and pain in the upper abdomen, right shoulder, or between the shoulder blades.

What Is A Stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted. The lack of blood flow causes the affected area of the brain to cease functioning. This may result in paralysis to certain areas of the body, a decrease in range of vision, an inability to speak, or possibly death. The damage to the brain may be permanent. Strokes can be diagnosed with the use of a variety of tests, including a CT scan, ultrasound, or MRI.

What Is A Heart Attack?

A heart attack, the common term for a myocardial infarction, is an interruption of the blood flow to the heart, causing cells in the heart to die. Symptoms include chest pain, numbness in the left arm, shortness of breath, nausea and possible cardiac arrest. Some individuals may not experience any outward symptoms. However, heart attacks frequently result in permanent injury or death. Heart attacks may be diagnosed through the use of electrocardiograms, X-rays or blood tests.
